It’s not enough that Carmen has toured the world in search of art heists—now she’s travelling through time as well. Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego takes the player through four time periods in twelve countries. It originally came with a desk encyclopaedia and the copy protection was based on this.
The player is given a chronoskimmer and must use it to follow the VILE gang through time, obtaining clues and an arrest warrant along the way. This game has a time limit which makes it a good deal more difficult than the original Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego. Any mistake means there will not be enough time to catch the suspect. The VGA graphics are a step up from the original game and the interface looks suitably futuristic for the setting.
A nice touch are the different floors in ACME HQ, where players can meet other employees, get coffee, and see the Hall of Fame. It’s an enjoyable part of the franchise and was really popular on release, selling 100,000 copies right off the bat. Reviewers gave it mixed scores, mostly because of replayability, but as an edutainment title it does the job well.
- This was the 5th Carmen Sandiego game released.
- This game was rebooted as “Carmen Sandiego’s Great Chase Through Time” in 1997.
