Originally released in 1993 for the Amiga, Cannon Fodder was immediately a smash hit. This was not unexpected because at the time Sensible Software was hugely popular in the Amiga scene with games such as Sensible Soccer and Wizball.
Cannon Fodder is a point & click action game where strategy also plays a large element. Your goal is to guide a platoon of soldiers across a battlefield, avoiding enemy fire, while completing objectives. You control the solders by clicking where you want to go, right clicking to make them fire at targets & both mouse buttons to fire rockets or throw grenades.
After each completed mission you receive new soldiers to replenish those you may have lost. With each death of a soldier, the home screen shows a new gravestone to remind you how many soldiers you had already lost.
This is not an easy game – it starts out simple but quickly starts throwing many things at you including tanks. Because of this some prefer to play the Amiga version because it allows for save-states.
- The Amiga originally had the infamous “War has never been so much fun” intro song but this was omitted from the PC version and replaced with an orchestral version … on some versions
- Several versions of the game were released on PC and some have an animated intro which was scrapped in later budget releases. Presumably this was done because many graphics cards had issues loading the intro.
- The Amiga received a Christmas demo of the game that combined Cannon Fodder with Sensible Soccer called … Cannon Soccer.
- The game caused quite a bit of controversy because of the use of the poppy on its box art, the symbol of fallen World War I soldiers. This resulted in a change of box art. The poppy still remains on the intro screen however.
- A sequel was released year and in 2011 Cannon Fodder 3 was released by a completely different studio but to very mixed responses.
There is a modern remake called Open Fodder. The goal of the remake is to make Cannon Fodder 1 & 2 run on modern hardware. The original files are needed to play. As of writing, the latest release (1.6.0) dates from 2019.
